Instructions:
Open the wd-popping-out.jpg. It is a nice photo, but it was taken inside without flash and a bit too dark. So let's fix it. In the Menu bar: Photo - Express Fix - Overall Exposure tab and click the #1 thumbnail. That is better. Don't click OK just yet.

Select the Color Satuaration tab and click the #2 thumbnail.

Now you can click OK. Minimize the photo, we will need it later.

Open a new white image of 575 x 450 pixels. Change to your Outline Drawing Tool Shape: Custom Shape - Octagon . Color: Black. Mode: 2D. Line Width: 1. Line Style: Solid Line.

With your Shift button pressed, draw a small shape of about 25 x 25 pixels. Align: Top. Align: Left. We need to duplicate this shape as much as 25 times. Press your Shift+D keys many times to duplicate. Rc.: Select All Objects. Align: Space Evenly with these settings: Make sure the Fixed radio button at the bottom is checked.

You will get a warning, but just click OK. Rc.: Group. Rc.: Align - Center Horizontally. Keep selected.

Duplicate this grouped object about 20 times, Select All Objects and Align - Space Evenly. This time the Vertically radio button is checked:

Keep selected. Group. Align: Center Vertically. Merge as a Single Object and Deselect. This is a part of the image you have now.

With your Base Image active, Rc.: All. Rc.: Border. Create a 3 pixel border Inward. Convert to Object and fill with black and Deselect. Select All Objects and Merge as a Single object. In your Layer Manager rename this object: Grid and hide it by clicking on the eye.

Back to your Outline Drawing Tool. Shape: Ellipse. Color: Black. Mode: 2D. Line Width: 3. Draw an ellipse any size. Rc.: Properties - Position & Size tab with these settings:

Align: Center Both. Deselect. Change to your Magic Wand tool with a Similarity setting of 6 and a checkmark in the: Search connect Pixels box, click inside the ellipse to select it. Rc.: Expand/Shrink. Expand the Selection with 2 pixels. In your Layer Manager unhide the Grid Layer and make sure it is selected. Hit the Delete button on your keyboard. Rc.: None and Deselect. Your image should look similar to this:

Rc.: Merge All. In the Menu bar: Adjust - Convert Data Type - Grayscale. This is the mask we are going to use on the photo. Minimize the new grayscale image and close the original. We won't need it anymore.

Maximize the photo we worked on and Rc.: Copy. Close it. We won't need it anymore. Open a new white image of 575 x 450 pixels. Rc.: All. Menu bar: Edit - Paste - Fit into Selection. Photo - Focus - Options - Auto-adjust. Deselect. Rc.: Import Selection. The mask we just made will show up in the box. Click OK. Rc.: Invert. Rc.: Convert to Object, Arrange: Bring Forward and Fill with a color of your choice. I used: #523A15. Keep selected. Menu bar: Web - Button Designer - Any Shape. Set the Bevel size to 2. Keep selected.

Now we are going to erase parts of the mask so it will seem that the flowers come through the ellipse. For better view we need to disable the Selection Marquee. In the Menu bar: View : Click Show Marquee. The selection lines will be gone, but the mask object should still be your active layer. You can check that in your Layer Manager.

To be able to see the flowers better increase the Transparency of your top layer to 50%.

Pick up your Object Paint Eraser tool from the Tool Panel and please use these settings:

(If needed use the Zoom Tool). Erase the following parts of the mask:

Take your time for this as the final results will show any flaws. Change the Brush size if needed. When you have erased too much, just click the Toggle Pen/Eraser button on the Attribute Toolbar and paint it back on. When you are satisfied with your work, set the Transparency of the layer back to 0 and in the Menu bar: View put your Marquee back on. Merge All. Add a simple frame if you like, optimize and save your work as a jpg.
