Mozart Frame Tutorial
PhotoImpact 12.
(Can be done with earlier versions).



Description: Create a beautiful black and white frame using PhotoImpact and the free Scribe filter.

Skill Level: Beginner. I assume you know where the tools are in PhotoImpact.
Additional Files: An image and a silver fill of your choice or you may use mine. The image I used is from one of my royalty free clipart CD's. Please download the materials, including the filter set for this tutorial. Unzip the folder to your desktop. We will open and save our files to that folder. Unzip the Scribe filter files to the folder where you keep your filters. Debbie's tutorial on how to install filters can be found here.

NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. Where it reads "Rc" in this tutorial, it means right click. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at: wouter@demoet.nl

You can drag this pointer as you go to keep track of your place in the tutorial.


For this tutorial you need to load PhotoImpact's Full Edit Workspace, so all tools will be availble:


Open the wd-mozartbeeld image from the download. Press Shift+N to expand your canvas with 1 pixel, colour: black. Expand sides equally: checked:


Press Shift+N. This time expand your canvas with 3 pixels, colour: white. Change to your Magic Wand tool. Please use these settings: ( Note: The settings of the Magic Wand tool will be the same throughout the entire tutorial).


Click on the white edge to select it. Rc.: Convert to Object. Menu bar: Edit - Fill - Image tab - File and browse to the folder with the downloaded materials and click the wd-knots3 file. Make sure that: Tile the Image radio button is ticked.


Deselect. Expand your canvas with 1 pixel black.


Expand your canvas with 12 pixels white. Select it with the Magic Wand. Menu bar: Effect - Scribe - 4way mirror with the default settings:


Keep selected. Select the 4 larger white rectangles on all side of the frame using your Magic Wand. Make sure the + sign in the Attribute toolbar is checked. This will allow you to make more than one selection at the same time:


Rc.: Convert to Object and fill with the same silver image as before, using the same settings of the Fill tool:


Deselect. Add another border: 1 pixel black. Add another border: 3 pixels white. Select that border with your Magic Wand, Convert to Object and Fill with the silver image. Deselect. Add another border: 1 pixel black.


Expand your canvas, this time with 15 pixels white. Select with your Magic Wand. Repeat the Scribe - 4ways mirror with the same settings: Keep selected. Select the 2 squares at all sides of the outer frame. You will have to click 8 times in total.


Deselect. Using your Magic Wand select the the larger rectangle on all 4 sides of the outer frame.


Convert to Object. Keep selected. Menu bar: Effect - Fills and Textures - Puzzle - Options with these settings: Background colour is black.


It seems nothing happens in your image, we need to bring this layer to the top of the stack. Rc.: Arrange - Bring to Front and Deselect.


Add another border: 1 pixel black. Add another border: 3 pixels white. Select that border with your Magic Wand, Convert to Object and Fill with the silver image. Deselect. Add another border: 1 pixel black.

Add another 10 pixel border, this time use colour #494949. Select with your Magic Wand. Menu bar: Web - Button Designer - Any Shape. Default settings but change the Bevel Size to 2.


Keep selected. Rc.: Select All Objects. Rc.: Merge as a Single Object. Rc.: Shadow with these settings:


Rc.: Merge All. Menu bar: Photo - Focus - Options - Auto-adjust. You are done. Add your name or watermark, optimize and save as jpg.
