Skill Level: Beginner. I assume you know where the tools are in PhotoImpact.
Additional Files: An image and a goldill of your choice or you may use mine. Please download the materials for this tutorial. The image I used is from the Free Dover Design Sampler.

NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. Where it reads "Rc" in this tutorial, it means right click. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at: wouter@demoet.nl
Instructions:
You can drag this pointer as you go to keep track of your place in the tutorial.

For this tutorial you need to load PhotoImpact's Full Edit Workspace, so all tools will be availble:

Open the wd-abf.jpg. Ctrl+D to duplicate it and close the original. Set your foreground colour to #EBE1BE and your background colour to #41423E.

Menu bar: Adjust - Expand Canvas (Shift+N). Expand your canvas with 1 pixel background colour.

Expand your Canvas with 3 pixels using the foreground colour. Expand the Canvas with 1 pixel background colour.

Expand the Canvas with 2 pixels, foreground colour. Rc.: All. Rc.: Border. Create a 2 pixels Inward border like so:

Rc. Convert to Object. Menu bar: Edit - Fill - Image tab. Browse to the folde with the tutorial materials and click on the wd-knots2.jpg. Make sure that the Tile the image button is checked.

Deselect. Expand your Canvas with 1 pixel background colour. Expand your Canvas with 5 pixels foreground colour. Change to the Magic Wand Tool with the Default settings:

Click on the 5 pixel border you just created. Rc.: Convert to Obect. Keep selected.

Change to the Clone Airbrush Tool with these settings:

Make sure that Edit Active Objects Only is checked too.

Note: In earlier versions of PhotoImpact you can find these Absolute, Frame and Relative modes under the Options tab of the Tool Settings - Brush panel:

(Note: Normally you would use the Relative Mode of Data Point to clone, but for this tutorial we will be using the Absolute Mode. It will give us the option to paint repeatedly from the same spot on the image we are cloning).

Double click the title bar of your image to get rid of the window box. Press your Shift key to determine your starting point. For the 5 pixel border I clicked on the blue vase like so:

Start airbrushing the border using longer and shorter strokes. Vertical strokes for the vertical part of the border and horizontal strokes for the horizontal part of the border. Don't make your strokes equally long, but add some variations. Your airbrushed border will look similar to mine, but as we used our own individual strokes, the results will never be exactly the same. Here is how mine is:

When you are happy with your results, Rc.: Merge All. Expand your canvas with 1 pixel bg colour. Expand your canvas with 2 pixels foreground colour. Rc.: All. Create another 2 pixel border Inward like before, convert to object and fill with the goldknot jpg. Expand your Canvas with another 1 pixel bg colour. Expand your canvas with 3 pixels foreground colour. Expand with 1 pixel bg colour. Rc.: Merge All.

Expand your canvas with 12 pixels foreground colour and select it with your Magic Wand Tool. Convert to Object. Change to the Clone Airbrush Tool with the same settings as before. For this border I used a different starting point.

Using the same technique as before, airbrush the 12 pixel border. Try to include parts of the first airbrushed frame by making longer upward brush strokes. It gives a nice effect. When you are happy with the results, Rc.: Merge All.

Expand your canvas with 1 pixel bg colour. Expand your canvas with 2 pixels foreground colour. Rc.: All Rc.: Border. Create a 2 pixel Inward border, convert to object and fill with the goldknot. Rc.: Merge All. Expand your canvas with 1 pixel bg. colour. Rc. All. Rc.: Expand/Shrink. Shrink the selection with 37 pixels. Rc.: Invert. Rc.: Convert to Object. Rc.: Shadow like so:

Rc.: Merge All. Menu bar: Photo - Focus - Options. Check the Auto-adjust box and click OK. Menu bar: Photo - Enhance - Sunlight. Accept the Default settings and click OK.

Add your name or watermark, optimize and save your framed image as a jpg.

That is all, I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as I liked writing it for you.
