II. Sony Alpha 100
10.2 MegaPixel D-SLR camera

“ If you also use the Sony Alpha 100 camera, I would like to suggest David D. Busch's book: Sony Alpha 100 Digital Field Guide. Published by Wiley Publishing, Inc. ISBN: 978--0-470-12656-1”

The Sony Alpha (a) DSLR-A100 is the first digital SLR for the Japanese consumer electronics giant. If it looks like the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D and 7D, that's no coincidence: Sony bought KM's camera business in 2005. The A100 shares the same basic design as the 5D and 7D, which includes the lens mount and CCD-based image stabilizer. So what's new on the A100, besides the Sony label? Here's a brief list: 10.2 Megapixel APS-C-sized CCD sensor Dual mode dust reduction system: dust resistant coating over the sensor plus a dust "shake off" when powered on or off Higher resolution LCD display New "Bionz" image processor and Dynamic Range Optimizer (a hardware solution) Uses Sony lithium-ion battery Support for Memory Stick Duo cards via included adapter So what about lenses? Sony is rebranding many popular Konica Minolta lenses, including the 18 - 70 mm model. In addition, they're working with Carl Zeiss to produce high-end lenses.

Sony SAL 18-70 standard lens

The DT 18–70mm F3.5–5.6 (SAL1870) is specifically designed to match the imaging characteristics of APS-C format digital SLRs, and offers a zoom range equivalent to that of a 35mm format, 27–105mm lens. It's an exceptionally versatile range that packs wideangle, standard, and telephoto lens capabilities into a single, compact unit, allowing you to experiment freely with the fundamental photographic elements of perspective, angle of view, and depth of field. From wide-angle landscapes with rich perspective and depth, to telephoto portraits with compressed perspective and beautiful background defocusing, the DT 18–70mm F3.5–5.6 really delivers.

Given the capabilities of this lens, its compact, lightweight design comes as a welcome surprise. With one aspherical and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element, effective compensation is provided for chromatic aberration and other types of distortion, ensuring sharpness and clarity right across the focal length range. The minimum focusing distance of 0.38m/15" is sufficient for standard close-up work, and the circular aperture lets you create satisfying defocused effects behind and around portraits, and in night scenes that include pinpoint light sources.

Sony SAL 75-300 standard lens

For subjects that cannot be approached, either because of distance or inaccessibility, this powerful 35mm format compatible telephoto zoom is the perfect solution. Offering a zoom range equivalent to 112.5–450mm when mounted on an APS-C format digital SLR, it captures your compositions with natural perspective at the low end of its zoom range, and with dramatically compressed perspective at the high end. This versatile performance makes it suitable for everything from sports and wildlife to landscapes and candid snapshots. And with a minimum shooting distance of just 1.5m/59" and maximum magnification of 0.25x, it lets you produce stunning, full-frame close-ups with ease.

Built for easy portability and comfortable handling, the 75–300mm F4.5–5.6 (SAL75300) features 13 elements in 10 groups, a distance encoder for ADI flash metering, and a 7-blade circular aperture for crisp imaging and beautiful defocusing. Team it with a second zoom lens in the wide-angle to standard focal length range, and you've got a two-lens combo that can handle virtually any subject you're likely to encounter.

An extension tube is an accessory for cameras with interchangeable lenses, used primarily for macro photography. The tube contains no optical elements; its sole purpose is to move the lens farther from the film or digital sensor. The farther away the lens is, the closer the focus, the greater the magnification, and also the greater the loss of light (requiring a longer exposure time). Lenses classically focus closer than infinity by moving all optical elements farther from the film or sensor; an extension tube simply extends this movement. When a lens is focused at infinity, its maximum magnification is the length of the extension divided by the focal length of the lens.

More expensive extension tubes contain electrical contacts allowing the user to use autofocus and electronically control the aperture of the attached lens.

Hoya Filters

Hoya UV Filter 55mm HMC Pro 1

Hoya Circulair Polarising 55mm Hmc Pro 1

This group includes everyday filters which can be left on your lenses, such as Skylight 1B, UV and Polarising. These are the first filters that every photographer should ensure they own. Skylight and UV filters should be constantly fitted to a lens to give improved clarity and color balance as well as offering protection to your lens. Polarising filters have several uses such as ellminating unwanted reflections, increasing color saturation and enhancing contrast.

Hoya manufactures a full line of filters in both standard and Hoya multi-coated. The difference between Hoya’s standard line and that of other manufacturers is that Hoya standard filters have one layer of anti-reflective coating applied to each surface of the glass. Many other manufacturers standard filters are bare glass, and bare glass can reflect as much as 9% of the light hitting it. This greatly increases the risks of flare and ghosting.

To provide photographers with a higher quality professionals require, Hoya created the Multi-coated line of filters. These filters have a 3 layer coating system that further reduces light reflections off the surfaces of the glass, the average is only 1-2%. This means that 98-99% of the light striking the filter is going through it, and depending on the type of filter, into the camera lens and onto the film. These layers of anti-reflective coating are bonded to the surface of the glass in a furnace at a temperature of up to 800 degrees F.
